Documents for marriage in Denmark

The most important part of preparing your wedding in Denmark is the documentation. It is not enough to collect the right documents – they must also be prepared correctly for submission to the Danish Agency of Family Law.

Approval of your marriage application depends on this.

Our agency helps you collect, review and prepare all required documents so that your application is complete and ready for submission.

Basic documents required

In most cases, couples will need:

  • A valid passport or EU ID card
  • A valid residence permit, a valid Schengen visa or a Schengen entry stamp
  • A certificate of residence from the country of permanent residence (if you live or have lived together)
  • Divorce decree or death certificate, if divorced or widowed
  • Birth certificate(s) of your child or children, if you have children together

This list is a general guideline. Depending on your personal situation, the Danish authorities may request additional documents.

Legalisation and apostille requirements

Certificates issued in EU countries, the United States, Canada and Turkey normally do not require further legalisation; an apostille is not necessary. For many other countries, original documents must be legalised with an apostille or consular legalisation before they can be used in Denmark.

We advise you on whether your documents need an apostille and how to obtain it.

Additional documents and proof of relationship

Since January 2019, Danish legislation has become stricter. In many cases, couples must provide evidence that their relationship is genuine, especially if one partner is from a non-EU country.

Examples of additional evidence include:

  • Photos together
  • Tickets or confirmations of joint trips
  • Joint rental agreements or registrations at the same address
  • Screenshots or records of regular communication

If the authorities suspect a fictitious marriage, they may reject the application or invite the couple for an interview in Denmark, which can significantly extend the processing time.
