Essential Documents for All International Couples

To ensure your marriage in Denmark is approved, most couples will need:

Valid Passports or EU National ID cards. These must remain valid for at least six months beyond your planned wedding date, or the AFL may reject the application outright.
Proof of Legal Stay: A valid residence permit, Schengen visa, or proof of entry to EU. This confirms you are legally present in Denmark or the wider Schengen area at the time of application.
Relationship Status: Divorce decree or death certificate, if applicable. This is required whenever either partner has been previously married, to confirm the prior marriage was legally dissolved.
Children: Birth certificates if you have children together. This helps the AFL verify family details relevant to your application, including any shared custody matters.
Certificate of Residence: Only if you currently live together at the same address. If you live separately or in different countries, this document is not required.

Note: All documents must be high-quality digital scans. The Danish authorities accept documents in English, German, and Danish.

Document Validity and Common Reasons for Delay

Passport validity: your passport must remain valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from Denmark. If your passport is due to expire soon, the marriage permit itself will be limited to match your passport's remaining validity — but never for longer than 4 months in total.
Overstay in the EU: if you've previously overstayed a visa or permitted period in the EU, you'll need to provide documentation showing either that the related fine was paid, or a valid, well-justified reason for the overstay. During the COVID-19 period, travel restrictions were generally accepted as a valid reason — that exception no longer applies, and overstays are now reviewed strictly.
Address and supporting documents: submitting documents with relevant, consistent addresses can also become a sticking point — mismatches between the address shown on different documents are a common source of follow-up questions from the AFL.
Divorce documentation: court decisions confirming a divorce must be final and legally in force — provisional or non-final rulings, or other alternative documents claiming to confirm a divorce, are often not accepted.
Translations: all documents must be translated into English, Danish, or German by a certified/sworn translator. Self-made translations, even if accurate, are not accepted by the AFL.
Document quality: poor-quality scans and damaged original documents are both common causes of rejection — the AFL requires clear, fully legible copies.
Complete submissions only: documents cannot be submitted partially with the rest added later. Your entire document package must be ready and complete at the time of submission — incomplete applications are not held open while missing pieces are gathered.
